Historic Stone Fence Gets a Makeover
Last Update: 1/08 6:33 pm |
The third annual Historic Stone Fence Workshop
took place this weekend, and it drew about 20 participants. People from
across Kansas came together to help fix a part of the Native Stone
Scenic Byway. The byway is known for its limestone fences, buildings
and bridges. The fence repaired this weekend is just a couple of miles
south of Interstate 70 on K-99. This fence is estimated to be more than
100 years old. About 50 feet of the fence were torn down and then
re-built this weekend. The remainder will be repaired in future
workshops. Leaders say participants leave the weekend with a new skill.
“Stone is such a hot commodity right now, as far as remodeling,
building, and rock gardens,” workshop leader Rocky Slaymaker said. He
added that many people take the skills and put them to use in existing
fences or stone structures at their homes. Steve Lira has participated
in previous workshops, and said he attended this weekend’s to learn
more about the foundation of stone fences. “It's not as hard as you
think it would be, the fence goes together real well, it's very
satisfying to see your product when you're finished,” he said. People
came out from as far as Kansas City. Several area teenagers attended
the workshop, and received a scholarship. For others, the fee was
$100.
